The Story We’re Not Telling About Energy

Energy is not a niche topic or just another industry. It is the common thread woven through nearly every aspect of modern life.

Energy touches everything. If you care about social justice, you should care about energy. If you care about the economy, you should care about energy. If you care about the environment, you should care about energy. If you care about technology, you should care about energy. Just look at the growing demand from data centers alone.

Energy is not a niche topic or just another industry. It is the common thread woven through nearly every aspect of modern life.

I’ll never forget a phone call with my sister during her senior year of high school. I was sitting in my office at Chesapeake Energy in Oklahoma, and she was in Mississippi thinking through possible college majors. She asked, “What do you think about me going into communications?” Before I could answer, she quickly added, “Not your type of communications for oil and gas. Something exciting, like sports.”

I laughed then, but years later, I still think about what I would say to her now.

“Exciting? Try working alongside the companies helping make modern life possible.”

That may sound dramatic, but it is true.

Energy sits at the center of some of the world’s biggest challenges and opportunities.

It shapes economic stability, national security, technological advancement, industrial growth, and quality of life. It determines whether communities have access to affordable electricity, whether hospitals and schools can operate reliably, and whether innovation can continue at the pace the world now expects.

That is what makes energy communications so compelling. It is not just about telling the story of a sector. It is about helping people understand how energy makes nearly everything else possible.

My sister never went into sports PR, or PR at all. She went on to serve in the Coast Guard and later earned her master’s in social work from Columbia University. Rockstar, I know. But here’s the part that has stayed with me: she grew up surrounded by energy professionals and still did not fully grasp the impact that work had on the world around her.

That is not on her. And it is not on the many people who see energy as little more than a necessary commodity in the background of daily life. It is on each and every one of us who work and support energy day in and day out.

For too long, the energy industry has allowed others to define it in narrow, incomplete terms.

We have let our work be reduced to a category, a political talking point, or a sector to move away from, rather than explaining the full picture. The real story is about people working every day to power communities, expand opportunity, strengthen resilience, and support the systems the world depends on.

Energy is not separate from the world’s biggest issues. It runs through all of them.

And that is the story worth telling and Lumix is partnering with companies across the energy space to bring that story in focus.
